The site made the icon
The block is not simply narrow. It is a street collision: Broadway cuts diagonally across Manhattan's avenue logic, Fifth Avenue holds the prestige line, and 23rd Street clips the north tip.
A normal rectangular building could not live here. The Flatiron succeeds because it accepts the site instead of hiding it.
Steel frame, historic costume
The building's modernity came from its steel-frame structure, but its public face came through Beaux-Arts and French Renaissance ornament. That tension is why the building still feels legible: new engineering, old-city surface.
The 1966 LPC designation report emphasized the prow-like quality, slenderness, and rich ornament, which remain the best way to explain the building to a visitor.
