As the Official Flatiron Landmark Historian and Logistics Expert, I invite you to join me on a poignant journey through the streets of New York City, where the past and present converge. Our destination is the iconic Flatiron Building, located at 175 Fifth Avenue, a testament to the city's rich architectural heritage. The Triangle Shirtwaist Connection is a story of tragedy, resilience, and the unyielding spirit of immigrant laborers who toiled in the garment industry. On March 25, 1911, a devastating fire broke out at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, claiming the lives of 146 workers, most of whom were young immigrant women. This catastrophic event would become a catalyst for sweeping labor reforms and a testament to the power of collective action. As we embark on our memorial walk, we will be joined by descendants of garment workers who will share their personal stories and experiences. We will traverse the streets of the Flatiron District, visiting landmarks and sites that played a significant role in the labor history of New York City. Our journey will take us to the Brown Building, the former site of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, where we will pay our respects to the victims of the tragedy. Following our walk, we will gather at Veselka, a beloved Ukrainian restaurant in the East Village, to enjoy traditional comfort food and honor the legacy of immigrant labor. Veselka has been a staple of the community for over 60 years, serving as a gathering place for generations of immigrants and locals alike. As we break bread together, we will celebrate the resilience and determination of those who came before us, paving the way for a better future. The Triangle Shirtwaist Connection is a powerful reminder of the importance of preserving our collective history and honoring the struggles of those who fought for workers' rights. As we reflect on the past, we are reminded of the ongoing struggle for social justice and the need for continued activism and advocacy. Join us on this meaningful journey, as we pay tribute to the lives lost and the labor movement that continues to shape our city today.
